High Quality Induction
We recognise that the role of headteacher is a challenging one. We aim to support all our new heads, whether they are embarking upon their first headship or developing existing headship experience.
For those new to Headship, we provide a National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services trained coach from our team of Local Leaders. During your first year in Sheffield, you will have access to twelve sessions with your coach. Your programme will start with an initial meeting to agree a personalised agenda which is shaped around your development needs and the context of your school.
A modular induction programme is available to support you through your first year.
Modules include:
- Effective school improvement planning
- Getting the best out of people
- Using data effectively to raise standards
- Resourcing to impact upon standards
- Strategic leadership
- Transforming the curriculum
- Self-evaluation
- Improving teaching and learning
- Preparing for Ofsted
- Diversity/community cohesion
- Delivering in-house professional development to improve teaching and learning
Experienced headteachers coming into a second or subsequent headship have access to a trained headteacher mentor and can select any of the induction modules for refresher/CPD purposes.
Network meetings based around action learning sets will be provided for all new Heads. These will be facilitated by a Lead Headteacher and are an opportunity for new heads to meet and discuss school-based challenges, share experiences and explore ways of applying your learning from the induction modules.
As a Sheffield headteacher, you will continue to have access to mentoring support from a trained local leader throughout your first five years of headship.
All new heads are invited to attend a one-day Organisational Development/Human Resources induction. This provides information about the OD/HR services and tools made available by the local authority.
