Multicultural Sheffield

Sheffield’s Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) population currently accounts for 15.5% of Sheffield residents, compared to just 8% in 2001. An estimated 24% of primary school entrants are from BME backgrounds as are 29% of those newly born in the city.

In recent years, the diversity of Sheffield has changed as a result of the higher birth rates among BME groups, inward migration from parts of the enlarged European Union, increased numbers of overseas students as well as refugees and asylum seekers coming to Sheffield. The evolving demographics mean that Sheffield will change substantially in future years.
